5 Tips for Family Members Supporting a Loved One at Home

8 April 2025 · Briars Homecare

Caring for a family member at home can be one of the most rewarding things you ever do — but it can also be physically and emotionally exhausting. At Briars Homecare, we work alongside many family carers and we understand the pressures they face every day.

1. Accept Help When It Is Offered

Many family carers feel guilty about accepting help, or worry that it means they are not coping. In reality, accepting support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

2. Look After Your Own Health

It is very easy to put your own needs last when you are focused on someone else. But carer burnout is real and it can happen quickly. Make sure you are eating well, sleeping enough, and seeing your own GP when needed.

3. Plan Ahead Where Possible

Having a care plan in place — even a simple one — can reduce stress enormously. Know who to call in an emergency and discuss your loved one's wishes before a crisis point if possible.

4. Connect with Other Carers

Talking to people who truly understand what you are going through can make a big difference. Carers UK and local carer support groups are excellent resources.

5. Consider Professional Support

Even a few hours of professional homecare each week can give family carers essential respite and peace of mind. Our team at Briars Homecare is always happy to discuss how we can help.
