Personal care is one of the most common forms of homecare support — and one of the most intimate. If you or a loved one is considering personal care for the first time, it is natural to have questions about what it involves, how it works, and how to make it feel as comfortable as possible. Here is what to expect.
What Is Personal Care?
Personal care refers to help with the tasks of daily hygiene and dressing that a person can no longer manage independently. This typically includes washing and bathing or showering, oral hygiene, hair care, dressing and undressing, continence care, and grooming. It can also include skin care, application of prescribed creams, and support with prosthetics or medical devices.
How Is Dignity Maintained?
Good personal care is built entirely around dignity. At Briars Homecare, our carers are trained from day one in dignity-preserving practice — which means always explaining what they are about to do, always asking permission, always using the products and preferences the client has chosen, and always working at the client's pace. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is imposed.
What If There Is Embarrassment?
It is completely normal to feel embarrassed about needing help with personal care — both for clients and for family members arranging it. Our carers have supported many hundreds of people through this. They are matter-of-fact, warm and entirely professional. Most clients tell us that after the first or second visit, any awkwardness has completely gone. Building a trusting relationship with a regular carer makes all the difference.
Gender Preferences
Many clients prefer a carer of a specific gender for personal care, which is completely understandable. Please tell us this when you make enquiries — we will do our best to accommodate your preference and will always be honest with you about availability.
